ITDC Integrated Food Surplus and Waste Management Program during the 2025 MotoGP event at Mandalika Circuit.

ibnchannel.id – As part of its commitment to sustainable practices in every international event, InJourney Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) has implemented Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles through the Integrated Food Surplus Program during the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia 2025, held on 3–5 October 2025 at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit, The Mandalika, Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

This program reflects ITDC’s strong focus on managing surplus food, reducing food waste, and minimizing the carbon footprint generated from food consumption activities throughout the event.

The Circular Economy-based Food Surplus Management Program consists of two main categories.

The first is Food Takeaway, which involves collecting surplus food that is still safe for consumption from the VIP Royal Box, Deluxe and VIP Tents, Dorna Sports Kitchen, and organizing committees. These meals are repackaged and distributed on the same day to volunteers and nearby communities, including local children’s study groups around The Mandalika area.

Through this effort, ITDC successfully distributed 1,000 food boxes (each 500 ml or about 500 g) containing hygienic, edible meals. This initiative not only helps reduce food waste but also provides real social benefits to local communities.

The program directly supports several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: By distributing surplus food, the program helps reduce hunger and improve access to nutritious meals.
  • SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: It promotes more responsible consumption patterns, especially in food waste management.
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: Reducing food waste also means reducing carbon emissions from food production, transportation, and disposal.
  • SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: It strengthens local community engagement in sustainability practices, fostering inclusiveness and resilience.

The second category is Food Waste, which includes food no longer suitable for consumption. This waste is processed into compost to maximize its usefulness.

In collaboration with Look Up Agro, a local community group supported by ITDC, 4.71 tons of food waste were collected and are currently being sorted. The waste is processed through bio-conversion using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae and composting methods. This approach effectively reduces waste volume while producing valuable by-products such as animal feed from maggots and organic fertilizer from compost.

The maggots will be reused by the Look Up Agro community, while the compost will support ITDC’s Integrated Farming System Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) program for local farmers in The Mandalika area.

Through this holistic approach, ITDC applies Circular Economy principles—transforming waste from one sector (event hospitality) into resources for another (local agriculture). This helps optimize resource efficiency, reduce waste, and reuse organic materials.

Composting also helps lower carbon emissions by preventing food waste decomposition that produces methane, one of the most potent greenhouse gases.

By managing food waste through these methods, ITDC aims to achieve carbon neutrality, ensuring that the carbon footprint from leftover food can be balanced through composting and maggot management.

To ensure this carbon-neutral claim is scientifically sound and verifiable, ITDC collaborates with Control Union Indonesia, a globally recognized independent organization specializing in sustainability verification and validation. The process includes carbon footprint calculation, waste management audits, and environmental impact assessments.

This step reinforces ITDC’s commitment not only to emission reduction but also to transparency and accountability in all ESG initiatives.

The Mandalika MotoGP 2025 stands as a tangible example of how sport tourism can serve as a catalyst for a greener and more sustainable future.

“Through the Integrated Food Surplus Program, together with local community waste banks, we are strengthening the implementation of the Circular Economy by optimizing resource management in a sustainable and responsible way. This collective effort empowers local communities and brings positive impacts to the environment, society, and stakeholders as a whole,” said Rannie Kamil, Destination Research & ESG Division Head, ITDC.

The Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia (MotoGP™) at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit is not only a world-class motorsport event but also a moment to showcase Indonesia’s real commitment to sustainability—serving as a model of good practice for international event management in the country.***
